happiness and sanity//

In the novel The Thief and The Dogs, Said’s sanity depended on his daughter. His desire to seek revenge and anger stemmed from his daughter’s reaction when she saw him. If only Sana had reacted the way he wanted her to, Said probably wouldn’t end up insane and killing people. With that being said, Sana was basically his hope and his happiness after being released from prison. She was the first person Said wanted to see showing how much happiness it would bring him just by seeing her. Another person who affected Said’s downfall would be Rauf Ilwan. Said used to look up on him and he was basically idolized by him. Seeing how much he has changed after being in prison shocked and hurt him. This worsens his situation because it made him feel like he had no one to trust anymore. Also, considering that his ex-wife and ex-friend betrayed him, it limited his positive perspective in life. That was the main thing that affected his happiness and sanity in the first place. Another character in the

Said started back in fright, darting in again between the tombs while the barking grew louder. He pressed his back against a tomb and took out his gun, staring out into the darkness resignedly. There it was. The dogs had come at last and there was no hope left. The scoundrels were safe, if only for a while. His life had made its last utterance, saying that it had all been in vain. It was impossible to tell precisely where the barking came from; it was carried in on the air from all around. It was hopeless now to think of fleeing from the dark by running away into the dark. The scoundrels had indeed got away with it; his life was a proven failure. The barking and the commotion were very close now and soon, Said knew, all the malice and revengefulness he'd been running from would be breathed right into his face. He held his gun poised as the barking grew ever louder and closer. And suddenly there was blinding light over the whole area. He shut his eyes and crouched at the

stream of consciousness//

Stream of consciousness is defined as a literary style in which a character's thoughts, feelings, and reactions are depicted in a continuous flow uninterrupted by objective description or conventional dialogue. This enables the readers to have a deeper understanding as to how the character is feeling. This gives the readers a clearer perspective and a more straightforward self dialogue which allows the readers to see what the author is trying to put out. In the novel, The Thief and The Dogs this was integrated by the author Naguib Mahfouz through the development of the characterization of the main character, Said Mahran. The novel circled around the uprise and downfall of the main character and with the use of stream of consciousness, it allows the readers to keep up with the development of the character itself with the transparency of the thoughts and inner turmoils of the main character accordingly with the narration. In chapter one, Said says to himself “I swear to God, I hate

translation//

Translated texts or novels aren’t as “hyped”, as kids in our generation would say, compared to the usual English novels. This may be due to the fact that translated texts were never seen or put out in the society as the type of books people should read or be focusing on. If you look it up, translated novels aren’t given much recognition compared to other types of novels despite the number of amazing reviews and comments on some of them. Truth is, some people would prefer reading books they know they can relate to instead of books that would open up a new world and a new perspective on things they’ve never experienced which translated books does. In the article I read of Claudia Roth published in the New Yorker, translated books give a deeper insight as to what the people from the setting are experiencing which media chooses to ignore. Newspapers, news reports, tv ads, billboards, etc. do nothing but inform us about the situations and sometimes the information they put out are biased ba

The Solution To Online ‘Harassment’ Is Simple: Women Should Log Off “Look, I know it’s not an ideal situation. In a perfect universe we would all be able to cooperate and coexist in the same environment, acting respectfully for each other’s views and the freedom of the land. But that just isn’t the world we live in mainly because of people like me.” says Milo “I believe that women are screwing up the internet for men by invading every space we have online by openly discussing their stance on feminism to grab more attention and victimize themselves (even though some of them were actually raped, abused and violated but whatever, right?) knowing that men are naturally boisterous, confrontational and delightfully autistic which is incredibly okay because this is how we were created to be hence why we are entitled to stalk, threaten, demean and scare women and they shouldn’t have the right to complain. ” “The internet can’t cope any more with such strenuous tension between the sex

education//

I think David Foster Wallace’s theory on education basically says that education doesn’t only include academic knowledge but also having knowledge of reality and of the things around you.  One of the many things he said which struck me the most was “The really important kind of freedom involves attention and awareness and discipline, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them over and over in myriad petty, unsexy ways every day. That is real freedom. That is being educated, and understanding how to think. The alternative is unconsciousness, the default setting, the rat race, the constant gnawing sense of having had, and lost, some infinite thing.” His whole speech talks about how we have the freedom to think and do what we want and with this freedom, we tend to just be in our own universe and we tend to just think about ourselves unconsciously. However, it shouldn’t be like that. This quote is saying that the best kind of freedom is having to think abo
